Sphenoid Wing Meningiomas

Abstract

Meningiomas are presumed to account for 15 % of brain tumours and are the most common tumours of the sphenoid wing. They are considered to be benign tumours arising from cap cells located in clusters around the arachnoid granulations that exist in relation to neural structures and their foramen. Anatomically they are divided in meningiomas of the lateral, middle and medial third of the sphenoid wing. The latter ones are of particular surgical interest. Therefore, we focus on this group. With diverse origins, clinical presentations and surgical management, they occupy the parasellar region with its complex anatomical boundary zone between orbital and intracranial compartments including the cavernous sinus.
