Abstract

A number of nuclear-reaction related methods reach into the field of trace-element analysis (e.g. for environmental, health and nutrition issues, and materials analysis) with methods such as Rutherford backscattering, PIXE (proton-induced X-ray analysis), neutron-activation analysis, neutron radiography, and prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA). Some may be used in art history for certification of art work, others also for detection of explosives, drugs, or contraband. Particle beams can also be used for materials modifications. Another important application is age determination in archaeology and the geosciences, more recently by accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) using tandem Van-de-Graaff accelerators.
