Abstract

The environmental characteristics of fjordic ecosystems are briefly summarized and the importance of basin morphometry and seasonality are emphasized. General system variability is discussed in terms of four defined fjordic types, and energy flow within subsystems is considered. The information available on mass balance studies in fjordic systems is assessed in terms of nitrogen and carbon budgets and used comparatively to assess the effects of latitude, stagnation and salinity on general energy flow through such systems. Some general conclusions as to the net imports and exports of energy to fjords are drawn.
