Zusammenfassung

Qualitätssicherung im medizinischen Sektor wird angesichts steigender Kosten im Gesundheitswesen immer mehr zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil ärztlicher Leistungen. Im Jahre 1990 wurden im Bundesstaat New York erstmals die 1989 erhobenen Daten über eingetretene, erwartete und risiko-adjustierte Letalitäten aller Krankenhäuser bei aortokoronaren Bypassoperationen veröffentlicht. Nach einer Klage der Zeitschrift Newsday wurde das Gesundheitsministerium ab 1992 gezwungen, auch die Sterblichkeitsziffern des einzelnen Operateurs bekanntzugeben.
