Der Begriff ‚rationale Erwartungen‘ wurde geprägt von John F. Muth (1961). Seine Hypothese ‚rationaler Erwartungen‘ lautet:
„In order to explain fairly simple how expectations are formed, we advance the hypothesis that they are essentially the same as the predictions of the relevant economic theory.“ (Muth, 1961, S. 315)
