Blood flow Simulations in a Cast of the Aortic Bifurcation

Abstract

The flow induced in a true conformal cast of the aortic bifurcation, by forced steady and pulsatile inlet flows, has been investigated experimentally. It was found that the time dependent part of the inlet flow have pronounced influence on the time averaged flow down stream of the inlet. Special features of the flow field are discussed relative to localization of early atherosclerotic disease which seem to coincide with regions of low time averaged velocities close to the wall and low all shear stress.
