Summary
An examination of new developments in software technology with particular reference to the use of object-oriented systems integrating relational and semantic database with expert system and text handling technologies, to provide Intelligent Object-Oriented Information Management Systems relevant to a wide range of patient care, research and administrative applications in Medical Informatics.
The paper starts with a brief overview of information management in medical practice and then identifies and discusses the limitations imposed by current software technology. New developments in object-oriented knowledge based software tools for information management applications are then outlined and their significance to Medical Informatics discussed.
