Cannabis Sativa Derivatives: Effects on Brain Function of Monkeys

On the basis of clinical evidence, several investigators have reported that consumption of derivatives of Cannabis sativa in various forms can produce severe behavioral pathology and brain damage [3, 4, 12–16]. These reports have been criticized. Some critics have contended that the described pathology was probably caused by factors other than use of cannabis products. Some have attributed the changes to other drugs used by the human subjects, and others have contended that the behavioral or brain pathology or both were possibly unrelated to drug usage. In studies in human subjects, it is difficult or impossible to control for these factors absolutely. Therefore, we undertook studies of C. sativa derivatives in rhesus monkeys, in which these and other variables could be accurately controlled. Our experiments were designed to determine if ingredients of C. sativa administered in dosages used by some human subjects caused alterations in brain function or irreversible brain damage, as well as altered behavior in rhesus monkeys.
