Abstract
The phylum Ctenophora is the second of the radiate phyla as defined by Hyman (1940). Ctenophores were studied extensively a century ago by Hertwig (1880), Chun (1880) and Samassa (1892) among others. The first ultrastructural report by Horridge and Mackay in 1964 was followed by a steady flow of morphological, ecological and physiological studies. The following description of epithelial cell types and functions intends to be a brief restatement of what is known to date from these recent accounts.
