Abstract

The body wall of nemerteans characteristically contains both epidermal and dermal components. The dermis is a sub-epithelial connective tissue layer which separates the epidermis from the body wall musculature. In the Heteronemertea it is predominantly composed of fibrous tissues with the dermal glands either embedded in it or forming a discrete peripheral zone, whereas in other taxa the dermis forms a thin to thick homogeneous hyaline structure, essentially comprising an epidermal basement layer (Gibson 1972). Apart from the work of Pedersen (1968) no detailed investigations have been made on nemertean connective tissues and for this reason the present chapter is concerned with the epidermal covering.
