Abstract

Aggregation of particles often produces fractal clusters. Many experiments (see also Chap. 8) and numerical simulations have recently explored the properties of aggregation kinetics, gelation and sedimentation, with emphasis on their fractal structure. Displacement of a fluid in porous media usually results in a displacement front. If the fluid is driven by a fluid of lower viscosity, the displacement front is unstable, and its motion is mathematically analogous to the kinetics of some aggregation processes, again yielding fractal structures. This chapter aims to review some of these phenomena. Lack of space and personal preferences naturally limit the scope of this review. Much more information can be found in recent books, reviews and conference proceedings on the subject [4.1–9].
