Abstract

In urban systems, the behaviour of various interest groups is determined by perceptions of their own goals as well as by perceived reactions to their decisions by other interacting groups, particularly those with faster speeds of adjustment. When modelling the actions of such groups, information theory may be used, with constraints related to observed behaviour of each group, including measures of variability describing the behaviour of faster adjusting groups. These concepts are applied to an urban modelling framework where a rationale is provided for simplifying the complex interaction patterns by identification of certain recursive sequences. In addition, when interacting spatial decisions are made at different levels of aggregation, methods are described for nesting or embedding the finer-level behavioural decisions in more macro-level decision structures which often consist of multi-objective land use planning policy instruments and moreover attempts at a synthesis of optimizing and behavioural model frameworks. Special attention is given to leader-follower behaviour, model estimation procedures, appropriate model sequences, primal and dual solution approaches, stability properties of the various equilibria, as well as measures of intrinsic model value.
