The functionality of DFN is defined by a set of data communication services and an underlying architecture, which provides these services to the user. Both items (service funcionality and architecture) will be described in chapter 2. Implementations of systems like DFN are normally based on clearly identifiable engineering principles. The three most important ones (role of standards, industry oriented quality measures for the software production and the role of manufacturers) are motivated and outlined in chapter 3. Chapter 4 contains four concrete application scenarios which serve as examples for the use of DFN.
