Summary

In the field of remote sensing the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) carries out different experiments with different sensors or sensor packages. Some of them are imaging airborne radar systems used for land and sea surface monitoring. The all-weather capability of these real and synthetic aperture radars enables the detection of oil spills on the sea surface operationally.

Since 1983, some different scientific experiments, e.g. Archimedes I, II and IIa, were carried out in the North Sea. The DLR participated with airborne radar and radiometer systems. During the Experiments, some different oil slicks and in addition some monomolecular layers were created to generate a realistic and well known situation for the measuring procedure. The second part of the exercise includes the collection of the oil from the sea surface by the oil-disposal staff.

Two examples of different airborne imaging radars, which are represented in this paper, show the good ability of those systems to detect oil and other layers on the water-surface which influence the surface roughness.
