Abstract
The effect of polymer additives on plane Poiseuille flow was investigated in a turbulent flow and a transitional flow. In a turbulent flow, frictional drag was measured. In a transitional flow, we maintained a laminar flow at a Reynolds number higher than the minimum critical Reynolds number and visualized the growth of A-shaped vortices artificially created in the flow. The results showed that polymer additives reduced the frictional drag in a turbulent flow and increased the spanwise wave length of A-shaped vortices in a transitional flow. It is known that polymer additives increase the spanwise spacing of bursts in a turbulent flow. Therefore polymer additives increase the spanwise spacing of the coherent structures in both a turbulent flow and a transitional flow.
