Summary
We implanted in 25 eyes of 23 patients the new small incision IOL Acrysof™ (Alcon Surgical Inc.). The biconvex 6 mm optic of this IOL is made of an acrylic copolymer with a high refractive index (1.55). The optic therefore is thinner than that of silicone or PMMA lenses of comparable power. As opposed to other foldable lenses the haptics are made of PMMA. The lens becomes easily foldable in warm (35-40 °C) BSS, and unfolds very smoothly within the eye. We inserted the lens trough a 3.5 to 4 mm corneoscleral tunnel. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. We were impressed by the rapid disappearace of intraocular cells and flare. Refraction and visual acuity had usually stabilized during the second postoperative week. During the 6 months follow-up the centration of the lens was excellent, and it was our impression that the posterior capsule opacifies less than with PMMA lensens.
