Lymphoid Malignancy and Monoclonal Proteins

  • Chapter
Sjögren’s Syndrome

Abstract

Bunim and Talal (1963) first reported an increased incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in patients with SS over two decades ago and suggested that the chronic antigenic stimulation triggered a malignant transformation event. There were three cases of lymphoma and one case of Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia which developed in 58 patients with SS. Since then, several case reports have suggested an association between SS and frank lymphoma (Talal and Bunim 1964; Hornbaker et al. 1966; Talal et al. 1967) or Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia (Anderson and Talai 1972; Whitehouse et al. 1967) as well as an aggressive lymphoid infiltrative disorder termed “pseudolymphoma” (Talal et al. 1967). There are now over one hundred examples of this association in the medical literature (Kassan et al. 1978; Schmid et al. 1982).
