Abstract
The city of Edmonton and the University of Alberta (both located in Alberta, Canada) will co-host the World University Games of July, 1983. Events such as the Games provide an opportunity to examine the assumption that competitive sport promotes international understanding. This paper contains a summary of the initial phase of sociological research on this topic.
