The Measurement of Schistosome Populations

  • Chapter
Bilharziasis

Abstract

The study of bilharziasis has now reached the stage where some attempt to be systematic is essential: the data available are too numerous to be comprehended individually. The position has also been reached where much is known about every aspect of the disease and its transmission, but different parts have been studied in different places and circumstances, and it is often impossible to interpret one set of results without local information on another part of the life cycle, which may be lacking. Recently the need for full study of schistosome population dynamics has become clear, but in most places one particular stage has been studied in great detail — cercariae in water, or eggs in excreta for example — rather than as part of a complete analysis. It appears then that there is a need for review of the available techniques for measuring schistosome populations at each stage of the life cycle. The course of such a review has shown that a few broad general principles and methods underlie the mass of technical detail concerned, and an attempt has been made to give these prominence here.
