Abstract
In January 1933 Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany by President von Hindenburg. In March the new Minister of Education, Hitler’s appointee Rust, issued an order dismissing all Jewish academics from all the educational establishments and research institutes in Germany. In April a list of the people considered undesirable by the new regime appeared in the newspapers. Einstein, at that time in Belgium, announced his resignation from the Berlin Academy.
