Digital Image Quality: A Contrast-Detail Study Using the Leeds Phantom

Abstract

A contrast-detail study using the Leeds phantom was conducted to evaluate five viewing areas in a multi-station clinical PACS system. The study showed that conventional film viewed on a viewbox was superior to all CR images when noise rather than resolution is dominant. However, the 18 x 24 CR plates were better than film for the smallest objects. For softcopy viewing the ambient lighting conditions were more important that the data matrix size or bit depth used on the viewing station.
