Parallel-plate viscometry of amorphous polymers in the range 104 to 1010 Pa s

Abstract

The parallel-plate plastometer technique has been applied to the study of the viscous behaviour of glassy polymers in the supercooled liquid state above the glass-transition temperature T g . Viscosity measurements were performed on polystyrene samples in the range of 104 to 1010 Pa s (approximately T g to T g + 100 K). The results obtained by this unusual method are in good agreement with viscosity values obtained by other traditional techniques in the range from 104 to 106 Pa s. The parallel-plate technique used in this work has been proved to be a simple, quick and adequate tool for extending the viscosity measurements of glassy polymers to a temperature range between T g and T g +100K.
