Abstract
A new model, called the reptating rope model, is presented for the rheological behaviour of polymeric liquids. The model is based upon the tube model of Doi and Edwards. The Doi and Edwards result is obtained (apart from a factor 3) by considering Brownian forces that are acting on the rope. By also taking into account the frictional forces between the interior of the tube wall and the rope the Curtiss-Bird equation is obtained (with the link-tension coefficient ε = 0.5).
