Abstract

Early theoretical and experimental investigations on the interactions between light and sound by Brillouin [1], Debye and Sears [2], Lucas and Biquard [3], Raman and Nath [4], and others [5], showed that it is possible to deflect and modulate beams of light using sound-induced permittivity variations in dielectric media. These control capabilities of light by sound proved valuable after the invention of the laser; during the 1960’s, acousto-optics experienced a rapid technological expansion, becoming a well established field with a wide range of applications in modern optical engineering [6–8].
