General Aspects of the Structure of Crystals

  • Chapter
Crystal Defects and Crystalline Interfaces

Abstract

Solid state matter can be considered theoretically from different view-points depending on the range of problems to be investigated. For example, the elastic behaviour is generally discussed in terms of the continuum aspect. Other properties can be explained on the basis of the atomic arrangement. Our main interest concerns problems related to the plastic behaviour of materials and, for dealing with those, we need a certain knowledge of the atomic structure.
