Abundances in Galaxies

Nuclei in the Cosmos

Part of the book series: Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics ((GTCP))

Abstract

The observed distribution of abundances of elements in the Solar System, stellar populations and the interstellar medium in our own and other galaxies is affected by nucleosynthesis in the Big Bang and in former generations of stars and by many aspects of the evolution of galaxies. A rough scheme for the resulting “chemical evolution” of the Galaxy (GCE) is shown in Fig. 1, and some observational data on H II regions and relatively unevolved stars, revealing clues about these processes, will be described in what follows. Evolved stars and planetary nebulae often show modified abundances in their atmospheres (particularly for Li, C, N, O and s-process elements) resulting from nuclear reactions in their interiors followed by dredge-up due to convective mixing [Joh89]; these important effects are beyond the scope of the present article.
