Abstract

Tangential shock wave direction should be selected whenever possible. This allows
  • optimal positioning of the shock wave focus with respect to its longitudinal and lateral dimensions

  • precise localization of the insertion plane at the point of bone/ligament insertion

  • positioning of transducer directly above the ROI when using ultrasound localization

  • minimization of the risk of injury to surrounding structures (e.g., lungs when treating shoulder)

  • avoidance of periostal over-stimulation, which can often trigger pain response.
