Aminoxyl Radicals as MRI Contrast Agents

  • Chapter
Bioactive Spin Labels

Abstract

Aminoxyl radicals have been suggested as potential MRI contrast agents for the last 10 years (1) but no clinically accepted examples for human applications have been approved to date. The following questions appear to need evaluation: (a) advantages of aminoxyl radicals as contrast agents in comparison to other chemical agents currently available; (b) toxicity and ways to ameliorate this property; (c) factors which influence biological lifetimes with suggested improvements; (d) versatility through derivatization; (e) pharmacologic properties as compared to other chemical contrast agents.
