Abstract

In the last few years recent studies implicating a deficiency of interleukins (ILs) in several diseases have underlined the importance of measuring in vitro both DNA synthesis and cytokine production (IL-2, IL-6) in the same cell system [1–3]. The production of ILs by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in vitro can be induced by mitogens, phorbol ester, or ionophores [4, 5]. Many different protocols exist that propose optimal conditions for IL-2 or IL-6 induction [1, 4–7].
