The Value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Evaluation of Soft-Tissue Sarcomas

Tumor Response Monitoring and Treatment Planning

Abstract

Over the period of 1986–1989, 210 patients with soft-tissue tumors were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A total of 350 examinations in these patients were performed. These examinations were analyzed retrospectively. Other imaging modalities such as computer-assisted tomography (CAT; 263 examinations in 130 patients), surgical reports, and pathohistological reports were included in the analysis. Sixty patients were treated by radiotherapy. Radiotherapeutic data including treatment plans, dosage, and fractionation were reviewed. The analysis included three fundamental questions: (a) the value of MRI in treatment planning for both surgery and radiotherapy; (b) the value of MRI in detecting recurrences; and (c) changes in normal tissue after surgery and/or radiotherapy.
