Lymphoid Lesions of the Eye: The Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Tumor Response Monitoring and Treatment Planning

Abstract

Local radiation therapy is the treatment of choice for both benign (pseudo-) and malignant lymphoma of the ocular adnexa (Kim and Fayos 1976; Jereb et al. 1984; Mittal et al. 1986; Pötter et al. 1989; Dunbar et al. 1990). Various approaches to orbital irradiation have been described by these authors, and selecting one of them requires exact knowledge of the tumor extent and of the relationship between tumor and lens. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the orbit combines multiplanar imaging capacity and excellent soft tissue contrast. The present study analyzes the ability of MRI to define the extent and anatomic relations of orbital lymphomas toward choosing an optimal radiation protocol.
