Abstract
Although in the broadest sense almost any neurophysiological investigation could be regarded as an exercise in input-output relations, studies undertaken with the specific object of measuring the extent and nature of postsynaptic action at various levels of input have yielded results of particular value. Especially noteworthy amongst such investigations have been those upon the stretch-reflex arc; input-output studies of other synaptic systems have also provided interesting information. It is proposed to survey briefly the contributions which some of these studies have made to our understanding of synaptic and reflex mechanisms.
