Abstract
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the Western world, and strong epidemiological evidence links solar UV exposure to the vast majority of these cancers [11]. Our current understanding of the multi-step neoplastic process has focused on DNA damage as an initiating event. The two most frequent lesions are the pyrimidine dimer, formed by a cyclobutane ring between adjacent pyrimidines, and the 6-4 pyrimidine-pyrimidone photo-product (Fig.1).
