Abstract
The interest in liposomes as carriers of macromolecules is based on their potential to enclose diverse materials of biological interest and to deliver them to many cell types. Recently, the value of dermatics based on liposomes as drug carrier systems has been proven for different types of ingredients, such as corticosteroids and local anaesthetics [1, 4]. To know more about the pharmacological potential of liposomes, it is important to investigate the liposome-cell interaction. Analysis in this field has so far concentrated on the adherence to and uptake by hepatocytes and renal epithelial cells [7]. In this context, it was of particular interest to answer the question of whether or not intact liposomes can be taken up by living cells of the human epidermis.
