In 1984, the CILAG company initiated the practical development of a liposome dermatic containing 1% of the antifungal econazole. Driven by the hypothesis that liposomally entrapped econazole might have beneficial clinical properties, focus was first directed towards finding a manufacturing technique with the potential for economic scale-up.
