Das Schattenbild einer Überschall-Strömung um ein Flugzeug-Modell zeigt eine Vielzahl von Verdichtungsstößen (Bild 5.1). Sie werden als scharf abgegrenzte, helle oder dunkle Linien sichtbar. Dies ist Folge des plötzlich wechselnden Brechungsindex’ des strömenden Mediums in Zusammenhang mit der sprunghaften Zunahme der Dichte.
