Heredity and the More Common Malignancies of Man: Carcinoma of the Breast, Stomach, Colon, Lung, Prostate, and Endometrium

  • Chapter
Hereditary Factors in Carcinoma

Abstract

Carcinoma of the breast, stomach, colon, lung, prostate, and endometrium represent some of the most common malignant neoplasms of man. However, in spite of their frequency, the etiology and pathogenesis of each of these malignancies remains unclear. At some time or other the pendulum has swung heavily in the direction of either a hereditary or an environmental etiology for these malignancies. However, we believe that such a nature-nurture position is unfruitful and will be shown to be untenable; specifically, we believe that when the etiologic facts are finally compiled for these malignancies, an intricate interaction of both hereditary and environmental factors will be disclosed.
