Abstract

It is clear that the surface properties of substances which in the form of dusts cause lung diseases play an exceedingly important role in the development of these diseases. Much work is therefore in progress to determine the nature of interactions at the surface of quartz and model substances such as calcite (1). If dusts themselves are used for study several complicating factors arise, such as influence of particle size, pretreatment, dust/reactionfluid ratio, etc., and in addition conclusions have often to be drawn indirectly. Nevertheless, such studies have yielded valuable information—see particularly the papers published by Ritchie et al (2).
