Abstract

Treatment with insulin is necessary for (1) all patients who developed symptomatic and clinically overt diabetes in the first three decades of life, except the few who were then considerably obese or those experiencing a spontaneous remission and (2) those diagnosed at an older age and inadequately controlled by diet and oral hypoglycaemic drugs.
