The Distribution of Diabetes mellitus: Frequency in Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific Islands

Abstract

The syndrome of Diabetes Mellitus as encountered in African and Asian people (especially in the Tropics and Sub-Tropics) does not conform, as a whole, to what is found in the more temperate climates of Europe and America. In many ways, it is an “illness of wellbeing”, in that its presence is often associated with overnu-trition and very frequently with the high ingestion of the refined carbohydrates, especially sugar: thus it would appear that the environmental factors are overwhelmingly important in the aetiology of the disorder, certainly in the first two generations, after which a copious family history seems to emerge. This is not surprising, as it is highly probable that the children of people whose nutritional status suddenly improves over a short space of time, will almost certainly enjoy the same standards — or even better — than those that have been responsible for the emergence of diabetes in their parents.
