Durch die Entdeckung der Radioaktivität des 147Sm-Isotops, das durch α-Zerfall mit einer Halbwertszeit von 106 × 109 a (λ= 6.54 × 10−12 a−1) das radiogene 143Nd-Isotop bildet, steht eine weitere Datierungsmethode zur Verfügung.
