Abstract
The author shows that a simple theory produces results similar to that obtained from the more complete two-dimensional theory developed by Pawlenko. This simpler theory presumes that the resulting wave leaves the skimming plane tangential to the plane after-edge and as a sine curve profile with the same speed as the plane. The Pawlenko formula is identical in limiting value with that developed by the author for high Froude numbers, as is seen from the figure on page 144. The discontinuities given by the Pawlenko formula have not been experimentally detected. Curve II in this figure indicates a finite resistance at zero speed thus suggesting that the wave height-length ratio is limited physically and departs from the assumptions of the theory. Using a trochoidal wave profile, the lower curve in the figure on page 148 is obtained when the various formulas are applied to a particular case. For high speeds all three curves again tend to coincide and give a resistance increasing as the fourth power of the speed. This variation is not endorsed by experiment which is more nearly as the square of the speed. This fact together with direct observation suggests that the head pressure at the leading edge cannot be neglected as is at present the case in the theory.
