Abstract
Cavitation occurs on a blade when the total hydraulic head reduced by the vapour pressure and rotational suction is less than the maximum suction induced on the blade. The value of the maximum suction Δp/q for blades of aerofoil and segmental sections is shown to a base of lift coefficient and contours of thickness ratio in figs 1 & 2 respectively. This diagram facilitates the choice of blade and lift coefficient to avoid cavitation. For small thicknesses there is little to choose between the two sections except that the segmental sections can be used to higher lift coefficients. For the greater thicknesses the aerofoil section show to advantage for a certain range of lift coefficient.
