Proposals Concerning Replication of the Golgi Apparatus

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Biologists have made more borderline observations, created more confusion, and dealt in more polemics over the Golgi apparatus than they have with any other cell organelle. The story of inadequacies, misrepresentations, straightforward observations, and entertaining speculations has been variously treated by many investigators [6,7,2, 47, 48, 56,16, 44, 30, 31, 5]. The literature is enormous and through it the question is frequently raised — how does the Golgi apparatus replicate ? Specific concern with replication of this organelle dates back at least as far as the first decade of the twentieth century when Perroncito [49, 50] applied the term “dictyokinesis” to what he assumed to be a process of division of the apparatus and implied that this division more or less parallels division of the nuclear material. Unfortunately the first half century of work and discussion have failed to answer the question conclusively.
