Abstract

Since the 70’s the concept of sustainability has emerged as a way to organize a variety of thoughts and actions which represent the feeling that humankind is over-exploiting the earth to the detriment of herself and other living beings. The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) politicized this concept by postulating an explicit link between (un)sustainability and poverty: Sustainable Development has now become the catchword for years to come (WCED 1987).

Parts of this presentation will also be published as Discussant’s contribution to the IIASA ‘92 International Conference on the Challenges to Systems Analysis in the Nineties and Beyond, May 12–13, 1993.
