Abstract

Cancer of the prostate (tables 36.1–36.3 and 36.6) is a common cancer in the elderly. More than 90% of patients are aged between 60 and 85 years. Year after year the incidence and mortality rate of this cancer increase (122,000 cases per year in the USA in 1991 responsible for 32,000 deaths). The mortality rate is 10% of all cancer deaths, second to cancer of the lung [4,12].
