Abstract
Many manufacturing companies are heavily penalized by the amount of Work-in- Process (WIP) and delays in the workshops. No matter how sophisticated, a scheduling method, which by definition operates at the operational level in the hierarchy, will have a limited efficiency since these delays and large WIP are a consequence of higher level decisions, in particular the tactical planning level decisions.
There appear to be good opportunities for research on the interface between scheduling and inventory theory. Both … have been developed in complete mutual isolation. Lenstra J.K., Rinnoy Kan A.H.G.
