Nimodipine for Psychogeriatric Use: Methods, Strategies, and Considerations Based on Experience with Clinical Trials

  • Conference paper
Diagnosis and Treatment of Senile Dementia

Abstract

The problem of diagnosis and questions of methodology in clinical psychogeriatric drug research have been discussed in several recent publications. A volume entitled Assessment in Geriatric Psychopharmacology was published in 1983, reviewing and discussing psychometric test instruments (Crook et al. 1983). A comprehensive source book for rating scales and psychometric tests was compiled by Israel et al. (1984). The assessment instruments reviewed are grouped into the three principal dimensions of physical, mental, and social functioning. Depending on the areas covered in one test, unidimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional instruments were further differentiated. The authors emphasize that the physical, mental, and social aspects of health have to be considered as perspectives of functioning rather than as fields of independent activities since in reality they interact and are not separable.
