Abstract
The theme of this workshop is how the statistical properties of fluctuations manifest themselves in nonequi libriurn systems. Many of the talks presented here have explored the dynamic consequences of particular assumptions about these statistical properties. Very little has been said on the origin of the fluctuations and the specific physical mechanisms that result in a particular statistical property. We focus on this topic and consider the microscopic origin of fluctuations in thermo-dynamically closed systems (we do not consider external fluctuations in this discussion). We will thus study the dynamics of various physical systems in contact with a surrounding heat bath. In our analysis the system, the heat bath and their interactions are treated completely dynamically. Our aim is to start from a Hamiltonian for the composite system and to arrive finally at a stochastic differential equation of the generalized Langevin-type with completely determined statistical properties.
