Transport Across Multi-Membrane Systems

Part of the book series: Membrane Transport in Biology ((MEMBRANE,volume 3))

Abstract

The epithelia of the vertebrate eye are of fundamental importance for this sensory organ because 1) they control the transparency of the cornea, lens, and vitreous humor by means of ion transports that prevent the accumulation of water and opacification of these tissues; 2) they control the intraocular pressure by means of the secretion of the aqueous humor at the level of the ciliary epithelium and are probably also involved in the formation and renewal of the vitreous body; 3) they constitute the site of the blood-aqueous and blood-retina barriers, since the capillaries of the choroid have separations or fenestrae between their endothelial cells. The tight junctions of the ciliary epithelium and the retina pigmented epithelium are the sites of the barrier, and this is different from the situation in the blood-brain barrier where the capillaries are not fenestrated.
